Japan Supports Health Care in Rakai District

The health sector of Rakai District has received donations from the Embassy of Japan in Uganda.  The project of 97,675 US Dollars (about 215 million Uganda shillings) was signed between the Embassy of Japan and Rakai Community Based Health Project in January 2011.

The first grant for the construction of Kyotera Medical Centre was advanced in 2006. Through this second grant, a new maternity ward, medical equipment and a generator have been provided to benefit over 200,000 women from Rakai District as well as the population at the Tanzania boarder who include expectant women and children in dire need of maternal and health services.

Mr. Yamazaki, the Deputy Head of Mission of Japan to Uganda, officiated at the handover that took place at the Kyotera Medical Centre. “I would like to call on each one of you to take part in sensitizing the mothers on the benefits of accessing professional help at a medical facility” said Mr. Yamazaki. He further noted that this would lead to safer deliveries for both the babies and the mothers.

This donation is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, 158 projects have been funded under the scheme in Uganda since its inception in Uganda in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
